Beyond the Great Wall

Synopsis
Thirty years after Inner Mongolia was proclaimed an Autonomous Region of the People’s Republic of China, a BBC team went there to see how the herdsmen of two remote communes were conforming to Chairman Mao’s ideological model. The team based themselves in one of the settlements and from there filmed the Mongols at work and at play: wrestling matches, horse-rideing contests and - the special skill of the local militia - firing from horseback. The Mongolian way of life seems to have survived relatively unchanged, but the people appear to be fully politically Maoist.
