Stone Masonry and the Making of a Monument: Processing and Working with Portland Stone

Synopsis
The Portland stone quarries on Portland Bill in Dorset have been one of the major sources of building and carving material for centuries, contributing to the character of many cities and towns in Britain. London in particular displays the qualities of the creamy white limestone to full advantage in period and modern architecture, in sculpture and in decorative carving of all kinds. It documents some of the methods of processing and carving stone and shows the preparation and cutting of letters and emblem relief carving for the Eagle Squadrons Memorial in Grosvenor Square, London.
