Squid and Its Giant Nerve Fibre, The

Synopsis
A brief account of Professor J Z Young’s discovery of the giant nerve fibres of the squid in the 1930s and emphasises the importance of these structures to the animals themselves. Shows some of the many techniques which neuro-physiologists subsequently developed for the study of the axons, including cannulation of the axon, insertion of intracellular electrodes, construction and use of voltage clamp-electrodes, micro-injection of radio isotopes, and internal perfusion of the axon. Where possible, these atechniques are daemonstrated by the scientists associated with their development and application.*
