Synopsis

The Spanish civil war was a microcosm of the ideological conflict of this century. When Spanish Fascists under Francisco Franco rebel against the republican government, full civil war erupts. Mussolini and Hitler send troops, planes and supplies to Franco’s aid. The romantic idealists of the American Lincoln Brigade fight on the side of the Loyalists. Soviet support of the Loyalists lends credence to the Fascists’ claim that it is communism they are fighting and the American public is confused over the issues of Fascism and communism. The inadequate response of France, Britain and the USA and the power politics played by Germany and Italy in Spain had grave consequences.
