Spanish Civil War, The

Synopsis
The course and major events of the Spanish Civil War including the Generals’ Revolt in July 1936, relief of the Alcazar in Toledo, defence of Madrid, collapse of the Republic in the north, Franco’s Aragon offensive, the fall of Catalonia and the end of the war. Special attention is paid to social, economic and religious factors, internal political development and the divisions on the Republican side and the consolidation of unity in the Nationalist camp. Consideration is also given to the media’s presentation of the war in Britain and elsewhere as well as to the emotional and intellectual aftermath of the war. Extensive use is made of original archive footage.
