- The traditional customs of the island of Ceylon are contrasted with the demands of western commerce. In four parts: 1) THE BUDDHA, deals with the legendary coming of Buddha to free the natives from their fear-worship of the devil; 2) THE VIRGIN ISLAND, examines the native culture and economy of the island; 3) THE VOICES OF COMMERCE compares the native methods of husbandry with the new industrial processes; 4) THE APPAREL OF A GOD asserts the continuity of life and tradition.
