Synopsis
Berlin’s current rebuilding programme includes the restoration of the Reichstag by Norman Foster, the Potsdamerplatz now a high-rise, high density commercial complex with buildings by architects including Piano, Isozaki, Togers, and Moneo. Libeskind’s Jewish Museum and Grimshaw’s Stock Exchange are among the striking new buildings. Previous periods of architectural development are the Siemenstadt housing 1952 and the Hansa Viertel housing 1957-61, the Cultural Forum 1946-85, the IBA (International Building Exhibition) 1984-87; they have included such names as Scharoun, Mies van der Rohe, Hellein, Rob Krier, Eisenman, and Walter Gropius.
