Synopsis
Explains how the atomic nucleus is investigated by the scattering of particle beams. By a series of analogies with water waves and light waves, the basic features of scattering experiments are described. Shows the tandem accelerator at Harwell, and with it a simple proton scattering experiment is performed. Discusses the interpretation of the results and the development of the concept of size in the nuclear world
