Silk, Muthappar and Vhs: Portraits from South India

Alternative title
Seide, Muthappar und Vhs: Portr‰ts aus SÜdindien
Synopsis
Presents three portraits of ‘ordinary’ people in the town of Nagercoil, southern India: Mala, a young weaver sharing a one-bedroom house with nine siblings, with a daily routine that revolves around the loom and the television set; Santa Cruz, once a fish trader and now a healer and magician who exorcises evil spirits with the help of the Virgin Mary and Ganesh, and Muthiah, a videographer of upper-class weddings. The video aims to show these people not as reprsentatives of homogenous masses, but to acknowledge them as individuals with their own specific worries and strategies in a changing world.
