Sea in the Seed, The: Sperm of ‘Ginkgo Biloba’ And Reproductive Evolution in Plants
- Synopsis
- Explores reproductive evolution in plants. Relates how in Japan in 1896, Hirase Sakugoro discovered flagellated sperm in a seed of the ‘Ginkgo biloba’, and later Ikeno Seiichiro found the same type of sprem in ‘Cycas revoluta’. These discoveries indicated that the ginkgo and cycads are intermediate forms between higher and lower plants on the evolutionary scale. Only recently has the detailed process of fertilisation of the higher plants been recorded in the living state. Reproduction processes in cycads and ginkgo provide a unique key to our understanding of the evolution of higher plants.
