Behaviour of Animals and Human Infants in Response to a Visual Cliff

Synopsis
A comparative study of depth discrimination of animals and human infants. Experimental apparatus consists of a central platform on top of a large sheet of glass. A textured pattern is located directly under the glass on one side of the platform (the ‘near’ side); on the other side the same pattern is located some distance below the glass (the ‘cliff’ side). Rats placed on the platform almost always descend to the near side and avoid the cliff. Chickens and young goats do likewise. Human infants ranging from 6 to 14 months are tested by having the mother appear in succession at either side of the platform. Almost all infants refuse to go to the cliff side. Shows that as soon as an organism is capable of locomotion, it is also capable of depth perception.
