Role of the Cell Membrane, The
- Synopsis
- Shows pseudopodial formation by an amoeba and the way such structures may take in solid materials phagocytically. This is followed by the action of contractile vacuoles in ridding protozoa of excess water, taken in osmotically. Considers the reactions of cells to salt in the surrounding medium, beginning with pinocytosis in an amoeba and proceeding to diffusion and active transport of sodium ions across membranes. Shows the difference in the way such ions pass through dead and live cells of frog skin in an experiment using radioactive isotopes of sodium chloride. Shows comparable experiments upon large algal cells and suggests an explanation of the mechanism of active transport.
