Revolution and Rebirth: Modern Theatrical Reform and Its Debt to Antiquity

Synopsis
The evolution of modern theatrical production based on Wagner’s ideal of the ‘total work of art’. Starting with Wagner’s reform of opera, it details the ideas of Adolphe Appia, who first formulated a theory of production with movement, music, lighting, and stage setting all integrated to create a unified effect. Appia’s designs are used to show how stagecraft acquired an entirely new basis; one still determing production today. To illustrate this, the video uses excerpts from a reconstruction of an epoch-making staging of Gluck’s opera ‘Orpheus and Eurydice’ which Appia and Emile Jaques-Dalcroze presented in 1913, and which many commentators believe marked the birth of the modern stage.
