Restoring ‘The Ambassadors’

Synopsis
Follows the three-year project to clean and restore the Hans Holbein’s painting in the National Gallery, London. Shows how the complex paint structure is investigated by scientific analysis, distinguishing original paint from later restorations. Also follows the difficult discussions about whether to leave or remove non-original paint and how far to reconstruct the large losses. Includes comments from Michael Daley of Artwatch International and art critic Brian Sewell, who have reservations about conservation and restoration.
