Reading at Key Stage 1: A Collective Approach

Synopsis
Focuses on the teaching of reading to Key Stage 1 in the classroom. The main emphasis is on dealing with large classes and finding alternative methods to one-to-one interaction. Stresses the social function of classroom collaboration and the joint reading of Big Books. The viewer has ample opportunity to observe the many other activities mounted by the various classroom teachers to assist and complement the teaching of reading throughout the infant years. Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 classes are observed. The deputy headteacher, who also teaches in the Year 1 class, is observed in her classroom, and she gives an interview on the processes and methods adopted in this particular school, the West Hove Infant School in East Sussex.
