Synopsis: Discusses ways of making sense of the behaviour patterns displayed by animals. Careful observation makes it possible to record and describe behaviour patterns and, according to Dr Niko Tinbergen, the first man to classify animal behaviour patterns, the patterns can be analysed in terms of ethology: motivation, survival value, development, and evolution. Tinbergen’s questions are applied to the three-spined stickleback.
