Question of Balance, A

Synopsis
For two days during the autumn of 1975, a partially collapsed tower crane threatened Queen Street mainline railway station in Glasgow. Stage by stage, the crane was delicately dismantled and made safe. The collapse was caused by the fracture of a tie bar holding up the crane counter-jib and a technical investigation of the reasons for this fracture is carried forward throughout the film. The purpose is to set classical engineering studies in a practical context, and to provide springboards for the discussion of important topics - statistics analysis, stress concentrations, experimental strain measurement, fatigue, crack propagation, impact loading, wind forces.
