Protect and Survive
- Synopsis
- In the 1970s the British government secretly prepared a series of information films to tell the public how to prepare for nuclear war. They would be shown on television if a nuclear exchange seemed unavoidable, but were never broadcast and were recently declassified. The video comprises three films: 1) PROTECT AND SURVIVE (COI, 1976, 52 min): an animated film advising citizens how to protect themselves and their families during and after a nuclear attack; 2) THE WAKING POINT (Crown Film Unit, 1951, 20 min): the story of one individual gives a broad picture of civil defence training, with the aim of encouraging people to volunteer; 3) SOUND AN ALARM (COI, 1971, 21 min): shows the nuclear warning systems, the use of bomb shelters, and the aftermath of an attack.
