Synopsis: Discusses the symptoms, diagnostic testing, treatment and biochemical basis of diabetes mellitus. In 4 sections: 1) Presentation: demonstrates the incidence of insulin-dependent and non-insulin-dependent diabetes, and the difference between the two. Discusses the symptoms and possible long-term effects of poor control of blood glucose; 2) Diagnostic Testing: looks at the simple kit used for self-testing of urine and blood, and the HbA 1c laboratory test for glycated haemoglobin; 3) Treatment: examines the need to monitor blood glucose levels and looks at the importance of diet, weight control, and if required, administration of the correct amount and type of insulin; 4) Biochemistry: shows how glucose transporter proteins work and examines the role of insulin in stimulating increased uptake of glucose from the blood.
