Planets, The. Part 1: Children of the Sun
- Subtitle
- Children of the sun
- Synopsis
- Begins with an historical look at our knowledge of the solar system, from the ancient stone circles to the Greek view that the sun and planets rotated around the earth. Galileo and his opposing view is introduced and the history of astronomy, as it is known today, developed. The more recent discoveries of Uranus, Neptune and finally Pluto, in 1930, are related through historians and, in the case of Pluto, the discoverer himself. The final part of the programme looks at modern optical, radio and in-space observational techniques.
