Synopsis
Series examining the physical abuse of children.
1: Defines and describes the incidence of physical abuse, and places it on the spectrum of child abuse, and describes causes and factors.
2: Describes the role and conduct of the medical examination in the diagnosis of physical abuse, gives the clinical picture and discusses typical injuries, and includes information on differential and wrong diagnosis.
3: 76 slides (available on video or as slides) which illustrate a range of injuries, with accompanying commentary.
4: Describes and illustrates what takes place after an official agency has been alerted to the possibility of physical abuse: interview of the family by the social worker, interrogation of the suspect by the police, and the case conference.
5: Distinguishes between care and therapy and describes the possibilty for therapy, emphasising the need for adequate resources. Also examines the factors associated with physical abuse with a view to prevention.
