Perceptual Processes

Synopsis
1: Allows users to discover by exploration the core problems in pattern recognition and learn how effectively they are handled by techniques which are widely discussed in the psychological literature. The users may enter their own stimuli and explore their handling by a single preprocessing stage incorporating several standard operations, and two types of matching operation (template matching and feature matching). Intended to be used to replace a laboratory class or to complement teaching. Approximately two hours of teaching material.
2: An opportunity to explore rules for recovering depth from motion, from well-known but limited formulations to more sophisticated modern ideas. Provides test displays, alerts subjects to rules that have been discussed in the literature, invites users to apply these rules to the displays, and shows the results graphically. The displays are chosen to underline the fact that simple rules apply in situations with special, simplifying properties, but break down outside them. Intended to be used to replace a laboratory class or to complement teaching. Approximately two hours of teaching material.
3: Demonstrates the problem of shape constancy in a three-dimensional world and illustrates the role of two key factors: expectations about shape and active exploratory processes (pro-visual action). Subjects are shown geometric objects, initially in a random orientation, and can manipulate them in virtual space using a mixture of controls. Their task is to judge the angle between two marked lines and their relative length. This allows them to explore factors which affect their estimates (notable object shape and their control strategy). Intended to be used to replace a laboratory class or to complement teaching. Approximately two hours of teaching material.
