Pantanal: Lifewaters
- Synopsis
- The river Plate Basin, South America’s second most important river system after the Amazon, is the site of a struggle between governments and development banks on one side and environmentalists and local communities on the other. At issue is a major new infrastructure project known as the Hidrovia, or River Highway, which would deepen the navigational channels of the Rivers Paraná and Paraguay to enable huge barge trains to transport raw materials from the heartlands of South America to the Atlantic Ocean. Also features the campaign being waged by Rios Vivos, a coalition of over 300 non-governemtal organisations from Latin America and elsewhere, who are questioning the advisability and cost-effectiveness of this mega-project and the development model which it represents.
