Oceans and Climates

Synopsis
In late 1982 a surge of warm water swept across the surface of the Pacific depressing the nutrient rich upwelling water of Peru and causing the already over-fished anchovy fishery to collapse completely. This natural phenomenon called El Nino by the Peruvians is one of the most intensively studied examples of ocean and climate interaction. The role of satellites and physical measurements is featured in modelling such interactions as computers. A remarkable 400-year-old coral from the Galapagos Islands suddenly lifted out of the ocean by a volcanic event is providing a living tape record of past changes in ocean temperatures and chemical fossils from sediment cores extracted from the deep ocean floor can reveal the winds sweeping off Africa thousands of years ago.

Notes
NB. As of May 2016 Open University Worldwide are no longer distributing DVDs. They have posted this message on their website: ‘Unfortunately Open University Worldwide Limited has decided that product sales are no longer viable given the reduced funding to Higher Education institutions and diminishing demand for the products we have traditionally stocked. At present the Open University Students Association (OUSA) will continue to sell the "Good Study Guide", and we are in discussion with other possible distributors to continue to make The Open University’s products available for purchase. As soon as we have any information on other channels of distribution we will update this notice’. Some products are still available via second hand dealers on Amazon.co.uk
