New Formulae for Food

Synopsis
Aquatic animals have a wide range of feeding habits and dietary requirements, all of which are sustained in the natural food web. Understanding dietary needs and habitat is important to the success of commercial fish farming. The programme examines two examples of the development of artificial diets for fish. The Sharpe brothers’ trout farm in Hertfordshire illustrates how a suitable environment is created to allow trout to thrive. The formulation of an artificial trout food is described by a representative of an animal feedstock manufacturer. The second example shows a salmon farm at Otter Ferry, Argyll, with research being conducted at the Freshwater Fisheries Laboratories at Pitlochry and Almondbank in Perthshire. John Thorpe of the Scottish Department of Agriculture and Fisheries explains how diet regulation is used to increase the salmon’s rate of growth without inducing the onset of maturation, thus improving the yield of marketable salmon.
