Narcissus

Synopsis
Three films by Norman McLaren: 1) Narcissus (1982, 22 min.), a balletic interpretation in which film, dance and music are merged to celebrate the myth of Narcissus and its timeless significance. The film uses frame speeds from 2 to 48 per second; 2) Pas de Deux (1968, 13 min), dancers Margaret Mercier and Vincent Warren are highlighted by rear lighting against a completely black shooting stage, with the individual frames exposed up to 11 times to create multiple imagery; 3) Ballet Adagio (1971, 10 min): a slow-motion study of the pas-de-deux adagio, with the frame speed reduced by four to increase the viewer’s perception of balletic movement. Danced by David and Anna Marie Holmes and choreographed by Asaf Messerer to the Albinoni ‘Adagio’.
