Much Loved Friend?, The: A Portrait of the National Gallery
- Synopsis
- A portrait of the National Gallery, London, at the time of the opening of the new wing. Interweaves the comments of curators, conservators, trustees, artists, writers, art critics and the public with behind-the-scenes glimpses of the staff at work and readings from novels and poems. Includes a 1958 interview with Mary Richardson, the feminist who slashed the Velazquez Venus, and archival footage of the gallery during World War 2, when the works of art were stored in a Welsh coal mine for safety. Also includes interviews with Prince Charles, Neil MacGregor, Howard Hodgkin, Terry Gilliam, Robert Venture, Denise Scott-Brown, Simon Sainsbury, Sister Wendy Beckett, Julian Barnes, Colin Avery, Paul Rego, Jill Dunkerton and Thea Rientis.
