Mouthbreeders, The

Synopsis
Explains the geographical distribution of cichlids. Malawi supports the greatest variety of these fish and their complex breeding behaviour, territorial habits and the various methods employed to protect their eggs and young from predation are illustrated. One such method, invaluable in the densely crowded areas in which they live, is for the female to carry her eggs in her mouth until, after hatching, the young are able to fend for themselves. The female of one species accommodates up to eighty fry in this way and does not feed for approximately seven weeks.
