Synopsis
Series featuring six of the world’s leading entrepreneurs, looking atthe background history of their business empirea, and through interviews, examins the feasibility and fallibility of their individual commercial philosophies.
1: Profiles Sir John Harvey-Jones when chairman of ICI. In his first 30 months ICI had doubled the price of its shares and turned a loss into a profit of over £1bn. Tells how ICI was rescued, examines Sir John’s style of leadership, and reveals some of his views on British manufacturing industry.
2: Giovanni Agnelli, whose business interests range from oil refining to football, talks about Fiat’s turbulent history from the war years, terrorism and the unions in the 1970s; to Lybian investment, and predicts the future of the car industry in Europe.
3: Akio Morita, co-founder of Sony, describes his path to success, his advertising and marketing strategy, his firm commitment to long-term projects, what he thinks are the reasons for Britain’s decline, and why Japan dominates world markets.
4: Robert Orville Anderson, the USA’s top private landowner and head of the seventh-largest oil company in the country, talks about his conflict with environmentalists, his ruthless rstructuring of ARCO in 1985, how he had the world’s biggest oil strike in Alaska, and his rescue of London’s troubled ‘Observer’ newspaper.
5: Stanley Ho, whose the main source wealth was a gambling franchise in Macau, now owns shipping interests, hotels, restaurants, real estate and trading interests world-wide. He explains his decision to invest in Hong Kong despite its reversion to China in 1997.
6: Russi Mody, India’s best known businessman, owns the Tisco steel plant, which provides not only work, but also schools, hospitals, social and recreational centres for employees and their families. Mody is proud of his man-management and Tisco’s strike free record since 1928, but is concerned that new technology will mean less utilisation of human talent.
