Melodrama Theatres of the French Boulevard
- Synopsis
- In the early 19th century the theatres of the Boulevard du Temple and the Théatre de la Porte Saint-Martin were popular theatres offering entertainment to the inhabitants of the most densely populated part of Paris. The slides are in four sections: 1) the physical environment in which the melodrama developed; 2) the visual as opposed to literary aspects of melodrama and its relationship to the pantomime tradition; 3 & 4) relatively loose classifications of types of melodrama: gothic and historical, and social and sentimental.
