- A discussion on medicine and the law led by Diana Brahams who is a barrister-at-law, editor of the ‘Medico-Legal Journal’ and legal correspondent to ‘The Lancet’. The participants are Raanan Gillon, doctor and editor of the ‘Journal of Medical Ethics’; Michael Drummond, health economist, Jack Dowie and Beverly Hunt. Diana Brahams introduces the discussion by outlining the current legal position regarding ‘informed consent’ and by arguing for a ‘no-blame’ system of compensation for adverse consequences of medical intervention. The discussion covers, informed consent, the ‘prudent patient’ standard, the ‘respected body of medical opinion’ standard, the nature of legal damages.
