Kinship and Descent (2 Parts)
- Synopsis
- Part 1: Although kinship and descent are not particularly significant organising principles in Western cultures, these cultures do incorporate kinship and descent considerations in some ways. This programme begins with a review of some of these, which include inheritance patterns, children’s names, married names, and important family names in business and government. Looks at ways in which other cultures are organised around descent patterns.
Part 2: Defines kindred and looks at the role of kindred in hunting-gathering cultures. With horticultural societies, descent and kinship relationships become very important, covering larger political and economic functions as well as domestic and social activities. With the development of societies based on intensive agriculture and their accompanying urbanisation, centralised government and specialisation of labour, other institutions of society have assumed the organising functions formerly handled by kinship and descent groups. - Series
