Interview Game, The (5 Parts)

Synopsis
Series aiming to help both interviewer and interviewee to understand more about the productive or awkward moments that occur in any interview, so that it can be a fairer system for everyone.
1: Explores the interview situation and argues that interviews are highly subjective. Differences in background and different ways of communication are crucial in determining the outcome. Explores these ideas through an analysis of four interviews for the post of driver/conductor with London Transport, and draws parallels with job interviews elsewhere.
2: Looks at selection interviews, and the skills needed to be a good interviewer. Many organisations arrange training courses for managers who conduct interviews. Analyses role-played interviews that were part of trianing courses run by Ford, Marks & Spencer, and South West London College.
3: Looks at what happens when personal needs have to be processed through institutions. Analyses a series of interviews between members of the public and housing advisory officers in the Ealing, London, housing department.
4: Offers advice on medical interviews, both with the GP in the surgery or at home with a health visitor. Dr David Pendleton analyses film of doctor/patient encounters and of a health visitor meeting her clients.
5 (presenter Dr Michael Argyle): Explores the ways attitudes and feelings are conveyed through body language. Psychologist Dr Robert McHenery’s advice to both parties is illustrated by role-played examples of good and bad practice in interviews.
