Initial Interviewing Skills

Synopsis
Considers what is meant by systematic and responsive communication in interviews with clients, and how to balance these objectives. In two parts: 1) shows a practice teacher and student jointly interviewing a woman who has recently discharged herself from hospital; 2) observes the subsequent practice-teaching session where the events of the home visit are discussed and analysed using a framework borrowed from Reid and Epstein. Highlights the value of direct feedback and the importance of practice teachers seeing their students’ work.
