In Your Library (3 Parts)

Synopsis
Part 1 stresses the need to preserve and extend the life of a book. Shows the way books are bound or cased by hand and the correct way to shelve them. Shows the damage that a poor environment and unsuitable storage can cause and the need for regular cleaning of books and shelves. Shows simple repairs as well as the damage that unsuitable temporary repairs with pressure-sensitive tape and metal clips and staples can do. Describes the problems of mechanical wood. Concludes that staff should note the physical condition of the books they handle.
Part 2 states the need to check books regularly for signs of dirt or damage and the necessity for a conservation policy to suit different subject areas of the stock. Shows how to clean individual books, the tools that are required and the way they should be used. Mentions the danger of micro-organisms on books to the human respiratory system. Details the type of paper to be used in repairs and shows how to repair tears, insert slips and ‘tip in’ materials. Discusses the need for preserving the original covers and the use of fall-down back boxes and portfolios.
Part 3 deals very briefly with the history of leather binding, showing that most older leather bindings are more durable than those of the the 19th-century onwards. Shows the difficulty of distinguishing between the different types of skins used but emphasises the need to do so in order to treat the book correctly, particularly with the appropriate dressing. Shows some fine bindings and the need to preserve some books as objects regardless of their text. Deals with the problem of red rot.
