Impact of Tourism 4, The: The Gambia, West Africa
- Synopsis
- Looks at how the holiday industry affects one of the poorest countries in the world, the Gambia. Tourism has become the country’s major source of income, but this video looks at the problems it causes: little money goes to the local people as most of the hotels are foreign-owned and even import food; foreign tourists offend local people by their ignorance of customs in dress and taking photos and videos without permission; young unemployed Gambians beg the tourists for money and are warned off by the police. Looks at how Gambians are trying to tackle these problems and asks whether community tourism - getting people to spend money locally - is the best solution.
