Description
This report by the National Audit Office notes the reasons for the failure of the BBC’s Digital Media Initiative, which was cancelled in May 2013 at a cost of £98.4m to licence fee payers. DMI was an ambitious project which aimed to fully integrate the BBC archive with production, allowing BBC staff and partners to develop, create, share and manage video and audio content and programming on their desktops. Among the report’s key findings are that no single accountable person was given charge of the project; reporting arrangements were not fit for purpose; the executive board did not apply sufficient scrutiny in 2011 and 2012; and that the technical aspects of the project were not scrutinised sufficiently for such a high a high-value and strategically important programme.
