Ulster Television holds the Independent Television Commission’s franchise to broadcast on Channel 3 in Northern Ireland. A selection of material has been kept since the inception of the station on 31 October 1959.

Access
Film Library staff will try to answer queries from any source. Due to security problems access to the Library is limited and must always be on an appointment basis. Most material can be transferred to VHS for external viewing for an appropriate fee. Programme sales are arranged through Orla McKibbin, Ulster Television Enterprises, at the same address.

Video/Film
Video: Since 1984 news is shot on 1/2-inch Betacam. Programmes on 2-inch VTR have all been transferred to 1-inch VTR. Material on 1-inch VTR is being transferred to Beta-SP.
Video components: Beta/Beta-SP, 1-inch Video, DigiBeta.
Film: Local newsfilm and magazine items form the bulk of the collection which includes important footage on the troubles. This can be broken down roughly as 35% news, 15% current affairs, 35% magazine and 15% arts and other general programming. Prior to 1984 all news and programmes were shot on 16mm film.

Notes
In 1991 a computer was introduced with a STRIX search system. All previous card index information is being entered on the computer along with all contemporary material.
Conservation policy
All transmitted news stories are kept. News/current affairs editors, in consultation with the Archives Supervisor, decide what camera /road tapes to junk. Tapes containing unwanted material are recycled.
