The Horizon Report 2011

Horizon_Report_2011The New Media Consortium (NMC), based in Austin, Texas, is an international not-for-profit consortium of learning-focused organizations dedicated to the exploration and use of new media and new technologies.

The Horizon Project, as the centerpiece of NMC’s Emerging Technologies Initiative, charts the landscape of emerging technologies for teaching, learning and creative inquiry and produces the NMC’s series of Horizon Reports. Since the launch of the Horizon Project in March 2002, the NMC has held an ongoing series of conversations and dialogs with hundreds of technology professionals, campus technologists, faculty leaders from colleges and universities, and representatives of leading corporations.

Every year it publishes a new report which looks at trends that seem likely to emerge over the next 5 years. The 2011 edition lists E-Books and Mobile telephony as the most important technology for the next year. Augmented Reality and Game-based Learning are more likely to emerge in the next 2 to 3 years.
