Latest BUFVC Gateway updates

Here are a few of the Moving Image Gateway entries that have been updated in the last few days:

RobertFrostAcademy of American Poets
The Academy keeps a complete archive of its live poetry readings and other events, dating back to John Berryman’s historic first reading of The Dream Songs on Halloween night, 1963. The resulting Poetry Audio Archive spans over forty years, comprises more than 775 recordings and 1,000 hours of tape, and represents the work of nearly 800 poets. More than 400 audio clips are available for free on the poets.org website, with more added every week. Additional audio recordings of Academy readings in their entirety are available for purchase on CD. The website also streams videos of a number of poets talking about their work and influences.

CERN Video Lecture Archive
The CERN Webcast collection offers online access to almost 2,000 video (and some audio) recordings of lectures, seminars and conferences relating to particle physics. Details of the event at which the talk was delivered are available, together with any slides used. Videos are currently streamed using mainly RealNetworks technology.

European Commission Audiovisual Services
The web pages of the European Commission’s Audio Visual Services include downloadable video, photo and sound coverage of EU-related news materials going back to the 1940s for use by journalists and other interested parties.

FSM Online
FSM Online, the online version of the now defunct Film Score Monthly, documents film music as an art form. It contains film music analysis, discussion, critical journalism, and the enduring legacy and history of the art of scoring for visual media, but also offers original video documentary series and in-depth audio interviews with prominent composers. Available via monthly subscription, which also gives access to the publication’s print, audio and video archives. A separate section of the site sells the 200+ CDs on the Film Score Monthly record label. These contain historically important original soundtracks from the 1940s through the 1980s, licensed from the Hollywood studios and lovingly preserved and restored for commercial presentation.

Mathematical Sciences Research Institute
The MSRI Video Archive features a wide range of lectures on mathematics recorded at workshops, seminars and conferences, as well as some special productions, usually with higher production values, for wider audiences. These videos showcase great lecturers speaking on topics from current research that are important, accessible, and ready to enter the undergraduate curriculum. The first production in this New Horizons series is a pair of lectures on Gröbner Bases, by Bernd Sturmfels, of UC Berkeley. Future topics in the series are likely to cover algebraic topology and its applications and hyperbolic geometry. The lectures may be viewed online, downloaded or purchased on DVD. QuickTime 6.5 or later is require to view the latest lectures and the older ones are in Real.

Wildlife Focus
The Wildlife Focus website was set up by the World Land Trust early in January 2008 to offer unique, high-quality multimedia content showing wildlife in remote South American rainforests. There is live footage from three webcams, one in the cloud forest of Ecuador and two in the Brazilian Atlantic Rainforest. Each webcam is visited by a wide variety of rainforest wildlife including many hummingbird species, brightly coloured tanagers, parakeets and toucans.  The site also streams video clips of other birds and rainforest animals filmed at Buenaventura and other reserves. The quality of the live images is extremely good, except when temporarily affected by climatic conditions. The site also offers podcasts and a virtual tour to show more about endangered wildlife and their habitats – and the conservation efforts needed to keep them safe.
