New on the Moving Image Gateway

The BUFVC Moving Image Gateway includes over 1,650 websites relating to video, multimedia and sound materials. These have been subdivided into over 40 subject areas. To suggest new entries or amendments, please contact us by email, telephone or visit the Gateway at http://bufvc.ac.uk/gateway/

Biointeractive
Providing a range of free resources for science education, this site, which is maintained by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute is a good source for short films, animations, virtual labs, interactive tutorials, podcasts and other multimedia resources to aid in the teaching of the biological sciences. Users can narrow their searches by topic and resource type, choosing from Lectures, Series, Video Clips, 3D Printing, Interviews etc. on subject arranged into categories which include Anatomy, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, DNA, Genetics, Immunology, Palaeontology and Viruses.

Maths Solutions
This resource is part of the University of Leeds Skills Library and features demonstrations of solutions to a series of maths problems that are known to challenge students. The solutions are presented as a series of short video clips displayed on the screen in a step-by-step, interactive whiteboard format. The selection of topics covers a broad range of skills from basic numeracy, to algebra, calculus, trigonometry, complex numbers, sets, mechanics and statistics & probability. There is also a special Maths for Nurses section, designed to test and improve maths skills required in medical situations.

John Peel Archive
The extensive record collection of Radio 1 DJ John Peel forms the bedrock of this resource. Users can browse along the virtual shelves to view Peel’s LP collection, which is currently in the process of being catalogued. A separate section features the DJ’s singles collection – currently a small selection of ‘B’ is complete, along with links to the music where available. The vastness of the collection means that this is very much a work in progress at the moment. The site also features links to videos featuring interviews with a number of Peel’s favourite bands and musicians. In 2014, in conjunction with The Space, the John Peel Archive relaunched its Record Box Project, in which key figures involved in music select tracks from the Peel collection and present them as a curated collection exploring the cultural context of the music, along with their own memories and experiences.

NBS TV
The NBS (National Building Specification) produces specification products for the construction industry, to be used by architects and other building professionals when describing the standards and materials of a construction project. The videos, which are streamed for free viewing, can be browsed by Topic area (Regulations and Standards, Building Services, Building Information Modelling, Sustainability, Contracts & Law, and Health & Safety). Users can also filter their searches according to discipline: Architects, Civil Engineers, Planners and Surveyors.

On the Nature of Things
Ed Prosser is a multi-media producer with a background in science. This site features his work, in audio and video, including films made for the Ri, podcasts and audio documentaries. Prosser also provides links to and comments on other science videos which he finds interesting. One of the most useful aspects of the site is the extensive production notes, accompanying each film, which explore the challenges of making science films. Prosser looks at the technical aspects of filmmaking: how to integrate interviews, animation, slides, what equipment to use etc. but also explores the challenges of how to clearly present complex scientific ideas to a YouTube audience without sacrificing accuracy.
