This BBC event includes a series of illustrated talks, conversations, discussions and preview screenings debating the relevance of the past, exploring different approaches to history on television and radio and hearing about the work of prominent historians and programme-makers.

There will be a rolling programme of activities and events in Studio 1, Broadcasting House. Each of the main sessions will last 60-75 minutes, allowing some time for audience questions and involvement. Events will begin each day around 10am and will run until early evening with breaks at lunchtime and teatime.

Festival highlights will include a short illustrated talk about the Queen’s Historian, Professor JC Beckett, coinciding with the centenary of his birth, delivered by Professor Alvin Jackson of Edinburgh University. There will also be discussions about ancient and classical history, the history of religion, heritage and architecture, archives, changing approaches to the teaching of history, the history of broadcasting and whether history and its lessons are a useful guide to present difficulties at home and around the world.
