The British Monarchy on Screen conference

Senate House, University of London, 23 & 24 November 2012

With Madonna’s W.E on the Wallis Simpson-Edward VIII romance attempting to exploit the Oscar-winning success of The King’s Speech and The Queen, and a film drama on Diana’s romance with heart surgeon Hasnat Khan in production, this Diamond Jubilee year seems the appropriate time to consider the historic past and current effusion of film and television representations of the British monarchy.

The conference will see academics, biographers, and directors including Sir Sydney Samuelson, who filmed the Queen’s wedding, convening to consider the complex histories and meanings of the British monarchy on screen. Download a programme here.

The conference is convened by the University of London Screen Studies Group, the Institute of English Studies, the department of Media Arts and the Centre for International Theatre and Performance Research at Royal Holloway, University of London.

Registration: £40 standard, £20 students/unwaged
